Murder suspect shot by law enforcement after chase

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - The investigation continued Tuesday after U.S. Marshals opened fire on a murder suspect in a Point Loma neighborhood, leaving him critically wounded.

Police said members of the multi-agency Fugitive Task Force tried to arrest Joseph Hill at 1661 Catalina Boulevard at 8:35 a.m. Monday for his alleged involvement in the shooting death of a male in the Linda Vista area Sunday. Neighbors have identified that victim as Sean O'Toole.

That's when task force officers saw the 44-year-old exit a residence and get into a vehicle. When officers attempted to arrest him, Hill started the vehicle and attempted to drive away.

As Hill drove away, he struck an officer and pinned him against a parked vehicle. Fearing the pinned officer would suffer great bodily injury or death, several officers fired their duty weapons.

Then, Hill continued driving north on Catalina where he struck another vehicle in traffic, lost control of his vehicle and crashed into the front yard of a nearby residence. At that time, officers were able to take Hill into custody.

Hill suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was transported to a local hospital. As of this report, he is in critical but stable condition.

The U.S. Marshal who was hit was taken to the hospital with hip and leg injuries. He is expected to recover.
