4th Annual Remember Me Thursday®

Posted: Updated:

With the close of summer, Helen Woodward Animal Center, in partnership with Blue Buffalo, is already deep into preparation to unite with animal welfare proponents and organizations worldwide for Remember Me Thursday®.  Honored, annually, on the fourth Thursday each September, the campaign asks pet lovers and animal rescue groups to create an unstoppable, integrated voice advocating for orphan pets to live in forever homes, not die waiting for them.

Grassroots candle-lighting ceremonies and a global avalanche of social media buzz will shine a light on the millions of homeless animals still awaiting adoption and encourage communities to opt to adopt and reduce the millions of orphan pets euthanized each year.  Helen Woodward Animal Center invites animal-lovers throughout the world and on-line to take part Thursday, September 22nd, 2016.

Since its inaugural event in 2013, Remember Me Thursday® has been supported by 164 countries with hundreds of thousands of individuals and more than 500 separate animal welfare organizations around the globe holding candle-lighting ceremonies of their own, spreading the message on social media, or lighting a virtual candle.

Each year, celebrities such as Helen Woodward Animal Center Board Member actress Diane Keaton, along with Hollywood notables and professional athletes have used social media to share the “opt to adopt” message and save orphan pets. This year, along with 50+ celebrity influencers to be announced, social media pet stars such as Lil BUB, Cole and Marmalade, and Tuna Melts My Heart will also join the cause.

The campaign was championed by Mike Arms, President and CEO of Helen Woodward Animal Center, and creator of both the International Pet Adoptathon and Home 4 the Holidays Pet Adoption Drive which, in partnership with national animal organizations, has placed over 12 million pets in homes since 1999.

“Millions of beautiful, adoptable pets will lose their lives in 2016,” stated Arms. “We all come from different countries, cultures, and backgrounds, but together, we can raise our voices and literally save millions of pets on this one day.”

(The Humane Society of the United States approximates this number at 3.4 million annually in the U.S. 2013)

To be a part of the 2016 Remember Me Thursday® campaign, individuals and animal welfare organizations are encouraged to get the entire world talking about pet adoption by tweeting, tagging, posting and sharing the beauty and life-saving significance of pet adoption using the hashtags  #RememberTheRescue and #RememberMeThursday.

NEW THIS YEAR: Animal-lovers can win their favorite pet adoption organization life-saving funds, gifts and food for adoptable pets in need. To be a part of the Remember Me Thursday Social Media Contest, simply upload your awesome rescue pet’s photo and story to the#RememberTheRescue Photo Wall for a chance to win!

Prizes include: Blue Buffalo pet food, Kong toys, and cash donations from Embrace Pet Insurance and Helen Woodward Animal Center, all presented directly to the non-profit animal welfare group of your choice.* (*Restrictions apply.  Final selection remains at the sole discretion of Helen Woodward Animal Center).

Individuals are also encouraged to organize or take part in a candle-lighting ceremony; light a virtual candle on-line at www.remembermethursday.org; and most importantly to always adopt and encourage friends and family to do the same.

Now in its fourth year, Remember Me Thursday® continues to grow in support with multiple candle-lighting ceremonies and special events already being organized internationally.  Helen Woodward Animal Center is grateful to corporate partner Blue Buffalo and to the 2016 corporate sponsors Embrace Pet Insurance, KONG, California Bank and Trust, Westfield UTC, Lamar and Sydnees Pet Grooming. Their contributions greatly benefit this year’s campaign and their generosity helps to support the planned events. The Center’s public candle-lighting ceremony will take place in Balboa Park at 6th Ave and El Prado at 5:45pm on Thursday, September 22nd, 2016.
