Seniors Take Over National Adopt A Shelter Pet Day

Posted: Updated:
Across the nation, spring has sprung yielding green shoots, new blooms, and baby animals galore- including puppies and kittens! It’s an adorable onslaught that could easily steal the show leading up to a national pet adoption holiday.
Not so fast, juniors… Senior residents at Helen Woodward Animal Center are preparing to steal the spotlight on National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day (Sunday, April 30th), by highlighting all the ways that “Seniors Rule!” This Sunday, in honor of snuggly senior pets and the spectacular senior people who love them, adults aged 55+ can enjoy 50% off of adoption fees of pets aged 5+.

On a day that draws attention to the incredible number of beautiful pets in shelters across the US (the ASPCA estimates that 6.5 million pets enter shelters every year), it would be easy to let the youngest, most energetic residents play the role of spokespet. Center seniors, however, are venturing their paws into the spotlight in hopes of highlighting all they have to offer.

Leading up to the national holiday, senior Center residents will have specially marked photos and bios online for potential adopter to peruse…. Example- Petey: This nine-year old Chihuahua is a cuddle bug and a coveted bingo buddy. Just scratch behind his ears for good luck!
“The pleasures of puppy and kitten-hood are well documented, but it isn’t often we focus on the plethora of perks to adopting an older pet,” stated Amy Barnes, Adoption Services Manager.
“Their maturity often makes training easier, and they have fewer behavioral challenges than their younger counterparts. Senior pets also have lower energy levels which means more snuggle time! There’s great diversity in adult and senior pets available for adoption, so adopters looking for anything from couch potatoes to exercise buddies are sure to find their match.”
Helen Woodward Animal Center encourages animal-lovers and anyone looking to bring a pet into their home to “think rescue first”, and support their local animal shelter this National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day, Sunday April 30th. The Center will also be offering a discount of 50% off adoption fees for senior people (aged 55+ years) adopting senior pets (aged 5+ years). For more information, please contact Helen Woodward Animal Center Adoptions Department at: 858-756-4117 ext. 313, visit www.animalcenter.org or stop by at 6461 El Apajo Road in Rancho Santa Fe.
